Nintendo recently revealed the starter pokemon for their upcoming pokemon game (this will be the fifth generation of the pokemans to date). Once again, they’re grass, fire, and water types. We know what they look like at the start, now all that is left is to wonder what they will look like when they evolve.

And that’s where the fun begins. So it’s time to take up the computer tablet, and dream up the final versions of these three pokemon.

First up is the Grass type Tsutarja:

Being inspired by a snake, the Grass/poison would seem like a clear route for this pokemon’s evolutions. But we already have two poison snake pokemons, and a ton of grass/poison combinations. The most interesting end that I can imagine with this pokemon is a Grass/dragon type. It would be doubly weak to ice, but it would lose it’s weakness to fire. Plenty other starters have had a double weakness as well, so it’s not like it will stop Nintendo.

For this design, I took the yellow curls and morphed them into wings. Grass starters also have the tendency to “bloom” and I thought the flower on the end was an interesting touch for the evolution.

Next is the fire starter Pokabuu:

Pokabuu is obviously based off of the pig. The question is if this turns into a dual type pokemon, what kind of type will it become? I would personally like to see an unprecedented fire/psychic type, but I can’t ignore the fact that pokabu has a bandit’s mask over his head. So my official guess is fire/dark.

Instead of black fur, I gave it burning lava plates because they look cool. That’s pretty much the only thinking behind that. This one kinda looks more like a middle evolution instead of a final.

Last up is the water type Mijumaru:

This pokemon is inspired by the sea otter (who often carry shelled animals on their bellies to eat them). As he is, he already looks like a snowman, so I think it’ll become a water/ice type.

Hmm… I definitely went heavy with the ice look. In my defense, I’m not sure how a sea otter can really look like a bad ass. Despite taking a lot of liberties, a lot of evolutions have drastic changes from the basic pokemon. Mijumaru is one pokemon that can go in a lot of directions.
So those are my official guesses. I look forward to the coming weeks to see just how wrong I am.

Or maybe brilliant.

I put a little more effort into this one. It really can’t be called a sketch comic.
